Today, Iran and America are at odds. Almost twenty-five hundred years ago, however, the first significant conflict between ancient Iran, or Persia, and the peoples of Europe came in the so-called "Persian Wars" with the Greeks in the early fifth century B.C.
These lectures will discuss the major events of these wars and how they contributed to the later Western Perception of the Persian and other Eastern peoples.
'The Greek and Persian Wars'
with Guest Speaker Ean Roby
Lecture One: The Consequences of the Persian Wars
Wednesday, January 20, 2010
Victory over the Persians soon split the alliance of Athens
and Sparta as Athens developed into a regional power through the Delian League. Sparta quickly reverted to its role
as Athens' adversary. This lecture will focus on developments leading up to the start of the Peloponnesian War.
Lecture Two: The Peloponnesian War itself
Wednesday February 17, 2010
Starting in 431 BC, this epic struggle between Athens and Sparta lasted
until 404. This lecture will focus on the main events and personalities of this war that ebbed and flowed over a period of
twenty-seven years.
Lecture Three: The Aftermath of the Peloponnesian War
Wednesday March 17, 2010
The seven decades from the end of the Peloponnesian War
to the beginning of the conquests of Alexander the Great are filled with action as Athens again rises to power and contends
with the Spartans, the Persians, and others.
